Keep your business safe this spring

Get you security system ready for spring

Spring has come and we are squarely inside the half of the year with longer daylight hours. It’s the perfect time to reassess your security strategy and address any vulnerabilities that may have revealed themselves in the winter months. As your business grows, so too should your security plan and there are many things you can do to spruce up your property and tighten up loose ends.

Here are a few springtime security tips to keep your business safe:

  1. Keep your exterior clear and tidy

A maintenance service may be worth consideration, especially when it comes to keeping your landscape well-manicured. Opportunists have many ways to identify vulnerable targets, but neglected property or property in disrepair is a common signal to look for. This extends beyond property and to the quality of your sidewalks, parking lots, and alleyways as well.

Make sure your landscape company maintains your shrubbery and greenspace.  Walk around your building regularly, looking for vandalism, to prevent the property from looking empty and unmanaged. (Look up “Broken Windows Theory”)

  1. Display security signage prominently

Many opportunists will actively pass up targets with security systems or dogs. Displaying a sign alerting potential threats to the presence of a security system is a strong deterrent in and of itself.

  1. Lighting

The installation of motion detecting lights, around the building and alleyways are a tried and true method to safeguard your property. Smart lights that randomly switch on and off can also give the appearance of occupancy, even when the property is empty.

  1. Use strategic landscaping

Plant prickly bushes under first floor windows to disincentivize burglars from entering through windows or attempting to sneak on to the property.
