Protect Your Business By Thinking Like A Burglar

Sometimes the most profound insights in life can be gleaned by adopting a different perspective (if only for a little while). When it comes to protecting your business from crime, have you ever considered looking at it as a criminal would? If you wanted to rob your business, how would you do it? Chances are if you can think of a plan, a criminal can too.

As a business owner or manager, you should be intimately aware of such things as entry points, inventory logs, and access to safes or other restricted spaces. You may not realize it, but your knowledge of your business could turn out to be your best defense against crime.

Here a few questions to get you into the criminal mindset:

Where are your access points and how are they secured?

This means doors, windows, emergency and service exits. Do you have locks, cameras, or alarm systems installed at these points? What about signs indicating the presence of an alarm system. Both of these are strong deterrents for opportunist crime.

Does your business look clean and cared for?

Opportunists look for the easy score. They want to get in and get out as fast as they can. Businesses that are kept clean and tidy are unfavorable targets more likely to have security measures in place.

How are your business shifts staffed?

An employee watching a store or business solo is much more attractive to the opportunist. One person is far easier to deal with than the unpredictability of two or more.

Is your business well-let?

This is not just reserved to your brick-and-mortar storefront. It also includes customer parking and entryways. Well-illuminated spaces deter opportunist crime because of the fear of being caught.
